William E. Harrell, Jr., DMD, C.DSM

Board Certified Orthodontist

Dr. Harrell is married to Joyce (Jay) Harrell who is the director of the Infant/toddler department at Jacob’s Ladder. They have two children, Tatum Harrell Schroeder and Bill Harrell III. Tatum and Mitt have two children (our grandchildren), Will and Sara Tate. Bill III served 21 years in the National Guard, worked as a security guard and now works for Dr. Harrell doing lab procedures, 3D imaging, 3D printing and many other jobs.

Dr. William (Bill) Harrell is originally from Columbus, GA. He graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL, with a double major in Chemistry and Math and a minor in Biology. Dr Harrell then graduated from the UAB School of Dentistry in Birmingham, AL, in 1975 where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. He then completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, in 1977.

He is in private orthodontic practice in Alexander City, Alabama, and Auburn/Opelika, Alabama. He is a Board-Certified Orthodontist (ABO). Dr. Harrell is also Certified in Dental Sleep Medicine. He worked with the late TMJ pioneers, Dr. Bill Farrar and Dr. Bill McCarty in Montgomery, AL, in the area of TMJ disorders. Dr Harrell has served as Vice-Pres and President of the Alabama Association of Orthodontists, as the Sect-Treasurer, VP and President of the 9th District Dental Society of Alabama and served on The Board of Trustees and in the House of Delegates of the Alabama Dental Association. He has also served on various committees of the American Association of Orthodontists®.

Dr. Harrell is the first orthodontic private practice in Alabama to have cone beam CT imaging (CBCT) and the first in the USA to combine both cone beam CT (CBCT) and 3D facial imaging (3dMD) in early 2005. Dr. Harrell’s practice focuses on airway centered orthodontic diagnosis and treatment and TMJ Disorders. Dr. Harrell is the Chairperson of the RadSite Cone Beam CT Standards Committee for setting standards for the Insurance industry of reimbursement.

Dr. Harrell is presently writing and will be the lead Editor of the textbook, “Growing into Breathing Problems: The Quest for Collaborative Lifetime Solutions” (in press for 2024) on Pediatric Sleep Disorders related to altered Craniofacial growth. The publisher is Springer. The two co-editors are well known experts and are physicians in their fields of sleep medicine, Dr. David Gozal, MD, dean of the Joan Edwards Medical School at Marshall University, and Dr. David McIntosh, a pediatric ENT in Australia. Other co-authors are well known in neurology, sleep medicine, surgery, orthodontics, dentistry, dental sleep medicine, nursing, allergy, asthma, speech and language pathology. The goal is to have a text that bridges Medicine and Dentistry (Orthodontics) in this exciting field.

Teaching

Dr Harrell is a professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham, Orthodontic Department where he teaches and lectures on Cone Beam CT imaging, airway, TMJ Disorders, nasal resistance testing and other topics.

Dr Harrell teaches doctors from all over the world on these important topics.

Dr. Harrell publishes scientific articles, chapters and books on these subjects.
