We are pleased to feature a number of 3D imaging technologies here at Harrell Orthodontics, including 3D cone beam imaging (CBCT). We acquired this technology in 2005, and were the first in Alabama to have this advanced device.
Cone beam imaging provides our orthodontist and team with a comprehensive, 3D image reconstruction of your teeth, mouth, jaw, neck, ears, nose and throat, revealing the “anatomic truth” of your orofacial regions so that Dr. William Harrell can provide you with the most precise and effective care possible. CBCT imaging allows us to:
- More thoroughly evaluate your jaws and face
- View your head and neck as a comprehensive whole
- Detect developing and existing problems
- Plan and evaluate the progress of orthodontic treatment
- Assess TMJ disorders
- Assess your airways, particularly the upper airways, for obstructive sleep apnea

Your imaging process is quick and comfortable. The scanning device simply rotates 360° around you, capturing data using a cone shaped X-ray. Your head will be held comfortably in a special holder to help you remain still and stable so the device can take accurate pictures, preventing the need for a second scan. In less than a minute, a full series of images from every angle will be captured and transmitted instantly to a nearby monitor where our orthodontist can evaluate them before providing you with an accurate diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan.
